Glenwood Springs Attractions

There are a variety of hotels near Hanging Lake, one of the natural wonders of Colorado, and we invite you to book your stay at Caravan Inn as you explore this stunning National Natural Landmark.

Hanging Lake  welcomes about 100,000 visitors per year as they hike toward this incredible lake. The trailhead begins in Glenwood Canyon and you ascend 1,300 feet in 1.5 miles to this spectacular turquoise lake perched in a tight canyon above the Colorado River. You’ll follow waterfalls and running water as you make your way toward the summit with some uneven rocky terrain in certain sections. Hike just beyond Hanging Lake to find Spouting Rock during the spring and early summer months! Please stay on the trail and out of the water as it’s a fragile ecosystem. Swimming is prohibited.

Every season is an amazing time to visit Hanging Lake but fall can be breathtaking time to visit and see the views from this amazing hike and chances are good you’ll encounter fewer crowds on the trail.  Visiting during winter can be especially cool as the waterfalls freeze but you’ll need to be more prepared for winter hiking with hiking boots with winter traction or ice grips, a stocked backpack with survival gear, and plenty of warm layers. No matter what time of year you hike the Hanging Lake Trail, it is simply a must-do for any visitor in Glenwood Springs.

We recommend giving yourself up to three hours to complete the hike as you’ll probably stay at the top to enjoy the view before hiking back down. Please note that the parking lots do fill up rather quickly and you cannot park along I-70 or on the exit ramps. There is a parking lot at the trailhead and an overflow lot with shuttle service. We also recommend taking plenty of water and taking it slow if you’re not adjusted to the higher altitude.
